Opportunity: Designing human-centered, AI-powered tools that improve people’s experiences with algorithmic media like targeted ads: We propose AdPlaylists, a browser-based system for end users to collectively control their online ad content.
Challenge: Despite its status as a multi-billion-dollar industry, online advertising is largely considered annoying at best and harmful at worst by web users, as we’ve explored in recent work. Moreover, we’ve found, targeted advertisements’ effectiveness may lie more in repeated exposure than accurate targeting.
